Music is often said to be a universal language, but Italian just might be the language of music itself. The music of Italy has traditional been one of the cultural markers of Italian national and ethnic identity and holds an important position in society and in politics. It is an integral part of Italian life, both in Italy itself and wherever Italians have settled.
