Vincenzo Orioles 1948, is married to Rosalba Bellanti and has three sons.
He graduated in Literature at the University of Messina in 1970, and lives and works in Udine.
He is Professor of Glottology and Linguistics at the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici e del Patrimonio Culturale of the University of Udine, where he taught from 1976 to 2015. He deals with languages in contact, language policies, multilingualism.
He is Head of the Linguistic Rights and Policies Working Group designated by the Italian Society of Glottology, and Director of the journal "Incontri Linguistici". He directs and coordinates several editorial series including: "Lingue, culture e testi" and "Lingue, linguaggi, metalinguaggio" (Il Calamo Publishers).
He held various institutional positions at the University of Udine, where he has been on the Board of Directors and in the Academic Senate.
He was Head of the Department of Glottology and Classical Philology and Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature. He coordinated an FIRB excellence project on Italian language in the world.
Author of works and essays dedicated to interlinguistic contacts, variability of languages, and linguistic diversity, he has held many conferences at Italian and foreign universities on these subjects.
